Smaller teams, bigger systems
The problem with small teams and AI isn't how much code you produce, it's whether a small team can still understand what it owns.
- AI lets a handful of people build something huge, but building it and reasoning about it at 3am during an incident are very different things.
- The gap between ""we shipped it"" and ""we understand it"" is where the risk lives.
- Fewer people holding more critical knowledge means a nasty bus factor and a real resilience risk.
- Shrink teams without rethinking architecture and the org stops matching the system.
Takeaway: complexity, not headcount, is the real limit, and AI grows complexity faster than a small team can absorb it. Comprehension and operability become bottleneck. Ownership and on-call don't shrink just because the team did, so redesign the support model before you cut people.
